Gigantic is an American animated musical fantasy film that was never made. It is based on the English fairy tale "Jack and the Beanstalk." The film was planned to be directed by Nathan Greno and Meg LeFauve, produced by Dorothy McKim, and to include original songs written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
The movie was originally planned for release on November 21, 2018, but the date was changed to November 25, 2020, because another movie, Ralph Breaks the Internet, was set for release on that date. However, on October 10, 2017, Disney decided to cancel the movie because of disagreements about the film's direction. Raya and the Last Dragon was then scheduled for November 2020, but its release was delayed until March 5, 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Premise
During the time of exploration in Spain, a boy named Jack discovers a hidden land of giants in the clouds. He becomes friends with an 11-year-old giantess named Inma, who treats him like a doll. At the same time, there is a group of Storm Giants who are 120 feet (37 meters) tall.
Production
In August 2015, during the D23 Expo, Disney announced a film called Gigantic. The film would be produced by Dorothy McKim, and the music would be written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who also worked on Winnie the Pooh and Frozen. Director Nathan Greno said the film aimed to create "the definitive version of Jack and the Beanstalk," a story that does not have a single accepted version. The film would differ from the original tale. On October 3, 2016, it was announced that Oscar-nominated screenwriter Meg LeFauve, known for Inside Out, would join Greno as a director.
On October 10, 2017, Ed Catmull, President of Walt Disney Animation Studios, said the film's production was "ending active development for now." A different project, later named Raya and the Last Dragon, would take the original release date. Catmull explained that sometimes, even with strong ideas and effort, projects do not work out. He stated that Disney would pause development on Gigantic at that time. A month later, The Wall Street Journal reported that Disney had accounted for nearly $98 million in production costs for the film.
Before the film was canceled, it was mentioned in a scene from Disney's 2016 movie Zootopia. In that scene, the film was called Giraffic. Other upcoming films mentioned in the scene included Moana, referred to as "Meowana," and Frozen 2, called "Floatzen 2."
In 2020, Disney released concept artwork for Gigantic in the book They Drew as They Pleased: Volume 6—The Hidden Art of Disney's Golden Age.
In 2023, a new Jack and the Beanstalk project was announced by Skydance Animation. John Lasseter would return as a producer, and Rich Moore, a former Disney animator, would direct the film.
Release
In 2015, the movie Gigantic was planned to be released on March 9, 2018. On June 30, 2016, Disney announced that Ralph Breaks the Internet would instead be released on that date, and Gigantic was delayed to November 21, 2018. In April 2017, Ralph Breaks the Internet took the November 2018 release date, and Gigantic was then delayed again to November 25, 2020.
