Adam Joseph Boyes was born on November 1, 1990. He is an English semi-professional footballer who plays as a striker for Redcar Athletic.
Boyes started his career in the youth team of York City. He made his first appearance in the senior team in 2008. After trying out with Manchester United, he signed a professional contract with York City. He scored his first goal against Kidderminster Harriers. Later, he played in the final of the FA Trophy at Wembley Stadium. In 2009, he joined Scunthorpe United. During the 2009–10 season, he played for York City and Kidderminster Harriers on loan. In 2011, he was released by Scunthorpe United and signed with Boston United.
Club career
Boyes was born in Lingdale, North Yorkshire. He began his football career with his local team, Lingdale, before a scout from York City noticed his talent. He tried out for York City and later joined the club's Centre of Excellence in 2005. In June 2007, he signed a two-year scholarship with York City. He was part of the team that reached the third round of the 2007–08 FA Youth Cup. While still a first-year scholar, he made his first-team debut on 16 March 2008 as a substitute in a 1–0 loss to Torquay United in the FA Trophy semi-final. After scoring three goals for the reserve team against Barnsley, he made his league debut on 8 April as a substitute in York's 4–0 win over Stafford Rangers. York's manager, Colin Walker, said, "I thought he looked the part and that can only be good for York City football club." He made two more appearances during the 2007–08 season, totaling four appearances. In May 2008, he received a one-week trial with Premier League champions Manchester United. His trial was extended for a second week, and he played in a youth tournament with teams like Hibernian, Middlesbrough, Tottenham Hotspur, and a Russian team. During the tournament, he scored for Manchester United after intercepting a ball from an opponent in a 1–1 draw against Supersport United. After this, he gained a reputation as one of the game's most promising players.
At the start of the 2008–09 season, he was near the first team but made only four appearances for York. In November 2008, he signed a two-year professional contract with York City. He scored his first goal for York on 31 January 2009 in the FA Trophy against Kidderminster Harriers, giving York the lead in a 1–1 draw. He scored his first goal in the Conference Premier on 21 April, helping York win 2–1 against Forest Green Rovers. York's manager, Martin Foyle, praised Boyes, calling him a "future star." In the next match, he scored York's winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Weymouth on 24 April, helping the team avoid relegation. He started in the 2009 FA Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium on 9 May, where York lost 2–0 to Stevenage Borough. He finished the season with 34 appearances and 3 goals.
On 10 July 2009, Boyes signed with Championship club Scunthorpe United on a three-year contract for an undisclosed six-figure fee. He returned to York on loan in October 2009, making his second debut as a substitute in a 1–1 draw with Oxford United. He returned to Scunthorpe in November 2009 after making four appearances for York. He joined Kidderminster Harriers on loan in March 2010, making his debut as a substitute in a 2–2 draw with Ebbsfleet United. He made four appearances for Kidderminster before returning to Scunthorpe in April 2010. He made his debut for Scunthorpe on 24 August as a substitute in a 4–2 League Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday. He was released by Scunthorpe in January 2011 after his contract was mutually terminated.
On 28 January 2011, Boyes signed with Conference North club Boston United. He made his debut in a 2–0 loss to Worcester City on 5 February. He missed a match against AFC Telford United on 9 April after a car accident earlier that day. He missed a penalty kick in a play-off semi-final against Guiseley on 8 May. He was released by Boston at the end of the 2010–11 season after scoring 6 goals in 19 appearances.
After a trial, he signed with Conference Premier club Barrow on 14 July 2011 on a one-year contract.
On 18 May 2013, Boyes signed with Conference Premier club Gateshead on a one-year contract. He made his debut on 10 August against Kidderminster Harriers. He scored his first goal for Gateshead on 12 November against Wrexham.
On 23 January 2014, Boyes joined Conference North club Guiseley on loan for the rest of the season. He scored 15 goals in 24 appearances, including scoring in 11 consecutive matches, before signing permanently on 26 May.
On 27 May 2017, Boyes signed with National League North club Bradford Park Avenue on a two-year contract.
In 2018, Boyes signed with Spennymoor Town. On 20 August, he replaced Glen Taylor in a match against FC United of Manchester and scored, making the score 2–0 at full time.
On 20 June 2020, Boyes transferred to Marske United in the Northern Premier League North-West Division. The club's manager, Carl Jarrett, called him "the biggest signing in the club's history."
During the 2021–22 season, Boyes scored 11 goals in the FA Cup, with five coming in one match. On 14 May, he received the FA Golden Ball award from Ian Rush for being the top scorer in the competition before the final at Wembley Stadium.
International career
In February 2009, Boyes was selected to join the England C team, which represents England at non-League level, for a friendly match against Malta's under-21 team. He was initially listed as a backup player for the game. He came into the game in the second half. England won the match 4–0. More than two years passed before Boyes played for the England C team again. His next appearance was on 15 November 2011, when he started a 3–1 loss to Gibraltar in a friendly match. He then played as a substitute in a 1–1 draw against Italy on 28 February 2012 during the 2011–2013 International Challenge Trophy. He earned three caps for England C from 2009 to 2012.
Style of play
Boyes plays as a striker, though he has also played as a left winger. In this position, his ability to keep the ball was described as "exemplary." He has said, "I am a player who holds the ball up, but I also like to move down the sides of the field. I consider myself a good finisher as well." People have noted that he shows "a level of awareness that is rare for a 17-year-old."
