Capcom Arcade Stadium is a 2021 video game collection made and sold by Capcom. It includes 32 arcade games first released by Capcom between 1984 and 2001. One game is free, and the others must be bought separately. It first came out for the Switch, then for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, and later for Amazon Luna. A second collection, Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium, was released in 2022. Before this, in 2013, Capcom made a similar collection called Capcom Arcade Cabinet for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Overview
Capcom Arcade Stadium includes the game 1943: The Battle of Midway for free, while the other 31 games are available for purchase as downloadable content (DLC). Ghosts 'n Goblins was sold separately, and the rest were first sold in three groups of ten games each. Each group includes games from specific time periods: Dawn of the Arcade (1984–1988), Arcade Revolution (1989–1992), and Arcade Evolution (1992–2001). In October 2021, all games became available for individual purchase. In June 2022, Street Fighter II was free to download until July 2022 to celebrate the game's first anniversary, Capcom's 39th anniversary, and the release of Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium.
The games run using an emulator, which allows players to rewind, choose difficulty, change game speed, and use filters that look like old arcade screens. Some changes to Street Fighter II include removing the Rising Sun Flag from E. Honda's stage because it is linked to Japanese war crimes, and replacing Hong Kong's flag with China's flag for Fei Long in the character selection screen due to Hong Kong's handover after the game's original release. In May 2021, Capcom released paid DLC that added an invincibility cheat for each game.
In May 2021, Capcom announced the collection would grow and asked fans for ideas on Twitter. On April 11, 2022, Capcom announced a sequel called Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium, which was released on July 22, 2022, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. This collection includes 32 new games, with SonSon as a free inclusion and Three Wonders as a bonus for pre-orders or early purchases of Capcom Fighting Collection.
Reception
In December 2020, Capcom announced its new game collection, Capcom Arcade Stadium. This collection was seen as an improvement over the 2013 version, Capcom Arcade Cabinet, which was available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The newer version nearly doubled the number of games included. However, some critics expressed concern about companies like Nintendo and Capcom re-releasing classic games for each new console generation. They noted that this practice is unfair to gamers.
Although some games in Capcom Arcade Stadium had appeared in earlier collections, such as the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle, Nintendo Life praised the selection of shoot 'em up games. This collection included the first console releases of games like Progear and 1944: The Loop Master.
By December 2023, 1.8 million copies of Capcom Arcade Stadium had been sold. Additionally, 1.2 million copies of the follow-up collection, Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium, had been sold.
