Ninja Gaiden 3 (written in all capital letters) is an action-adventure game released in 2012. It was created by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo Koei. The game follows Ninja Gaiden II and was available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 worldwide in March 2012. A revised version, called Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, was later released in the same year. It was first published by Nintendo for the Wii U and later made available on other platforms.

This game is the first in the modern series to be directed by someone other than Tomonobu Itagaki, the series’ main director. Fumihiko Yasuda and Yosuke Hayashi directed the game instead. A later game, Ninja Gaiden 4, was released on October 21, 2025.

Gameplay

Ninja Gaiden 3 introduces new features and changes to gameplay. One new feature is "Steel on Bone," a special visual effect that lets players see Ryu cutting through enemies during slow-motion moments. A new ability called Kunai Climb allows Ryu to climb walls using his kunai, which he can use to attack enemies from above. In some situations, players must be stealthy, as Ryu can now sneak up on enemies and kill them with one strike. Enemies speak during battles and do not die quickly. They scream when hurt and bleed instead of being cut off or dismembered.

Some changes include a slide maneuver that replaces the Reverse Wind Technique from earlier games. Ryu uses this move to pass through narrow spaces and attack enemies. The Ultimate Technique idea has changed slightly. Now, Ryu’s cursed right arm, called the Grip of the Murder, powers his ultimate attack. When Ryu defeats a certain number of enemies, his arm glows red. Players can then charge an ultimate attack by absorbing fallen enemies instead of using essence.

The HUD only appears when Ryu is fighting and disappears afterward. The Muramasa store is no longer in the game. Instead, Ryu receives different swords as the game progresses. He can also use his shuriken and a high-tech bow. The bow’s arrows improve as the game continues, and both weapons have unlimited ammo. Items are not used in the game. Dragon Statues, which let Ryu save and heal, are replaced by a scripted Falcon that appears at specific points to restore his health fully.

The Ninpo concept has been updated. In single-player mode, Ryu has only one Ninpo that turns him into a giant fire dragon. To use it, players must defeat enemies to fill a bar below the health bar. Once full, the Ninpo can be activated to kill all enemies onscreen and restore Ryu’s health. The amount of health restored depends on how many enemies remain when the Ninpo is used. In multiplayer modes (co-op and competitive), other Ninpo abilities are available, such as the Art of the Piercing Void.

The PlayStation 3 version of Ninja Gaiden 3 includes an optional control scheme for the PlayStation Move. This feature provides players with a new way to experience combat and slicing enemies during battles.

Plot

The story begins when Ryu is asked by the Japanese Self-Defense Force to help stop a terrorist group led by a secret alchemist known as the Regent of the Mask. The Regent wants Ryu to come personally. When Ryu meets the Regent at the Prime Minister’s residence in London, the Regent curses Ryu’s right arm with the Grip of Murder. This curse grows stronger with every life Ryu has taken, causing the Dragon Sword to be absorbed into Ryu’s arm. Later, Ryu and a JSDF member named Mizuki McCloud watch as the Regent demands that all nations surrender within seven days or face destruction.

After the JSDF ship Yunagi receives a signal from the Rub’ al Khali desert, Ryu travels there with Mizuki and meets Ayane. Ayane gives Ryu the Jinran-Maru sword, a treasure of the Tenshin clan, at Hayate’s request. Ryu goes to a tower in the desert, where he faces the Regent again. The Regent explains that the Grip of Murder used the Dragon Sword to spread the curse into Ryu’s arm. Without treatment, the curse will destroy Ryu’s arm and eventually kill him. After defeating an attack helicopter, Ryu returns to the Yunagi, where he meets Mizuki’s daughter, Canna, and Cliff Higgins, Mizuki’s brother-in-law. Cliff reveals that the group they are fighting is called the Lords of Alchemy (LOA).

Ryu travels to Abismo Island, where he battles the Regent again and defeats a clone of a Gigantosaurus created by him. He then discovers that Mizuki has been captured and rescues her, only for her to knock him unconscious with a tranquilizer gun.

Ryu awakens in a VR simulator, where he meets Lovelace, a mysterious and dangerous figure. Lovelace shows Ryu that he can be hurt or killed in the simulation. Ryu is forced to relive parts of his past, including battles at the blimp, Vigoor, the Sky City in Tokyo, and the Prime Minister’s residence, where he fights a virtual version of the Regent. After escaping, Ryu fights through LOA guards and finds Canna. They reunite with Mizuki, who is held captive by the Regent. The Regent pushes Lovelace into a prototype called God’s Egg, and Ryu must fight a mutated version of Lovelace. After defeating her, Ryu escapes with Canna and Mizuki but is arrested by the U.S. military. He is reprimanded by Captain Heinlern and ordered to stop his mission. Ryu returns to Hayabusa Village to find a way to remove the curse.

Ryu visits Genshin’s grave, where he retrieves the Blade of the Archfiend, a weapon from the end of Ninja Gaiden II. He carries the blade back to the village, fighting many Black Spider Ninja until the Grip of Murder weakens him, causing him to collapse. He wakes up in the clan leader’s home, cared for by Momiji, the Dragon Shrine Maiden. Ryu and Momiji travel to where his father, Joe Hayabusa, lives. Along the way, they are attacked by the Black Spider Ninja and the sorceress Obaba, who has returned from the dead. After defeating them, they reach Joe’s house. Joe explains that the curse is a punishment for the actions of the Dragon Ninja Clan over many generations.

Back on the Yunagi, Ryu is sent to Antarctica with Cliff as backup. There, he fights many enemies, including an evil version of himself called the Epigonos. The Grip of Murder activates, and Cliff reveals he is part of the LOA. Cliff’s grandfather, Ashtear Higgins, the LOA Chairman, explains that Cliff leads LOA’s research and has plans for Canna. Ryu tries to stop them but is knocked off their jet. Cliff tells Ryu he will meet him on the Black Narwhal, a hidden aircraft carrier. Ryu is picked up by Ken Ishigami from the JSDF and taken to a UN vessel, where he learns Canna is missing.

Ryu and Mizuki fly to the Black Narwhal. Ryu jumps off their plane, defeats the escort ships, and lands on the carrier. There, he fights and defeats Ashtear, who reveals his plans for Canna. Ryu searches the ship and confronts the Regent of the Mask, who is watching as Canna is merged with the Egg of a God. Ryu defeats the Regent and is shocked to learn the Regent is Canna’s father, Theodore Higgins, who was believed to be dead. Cliff reveals he killed Theodore to make him die at Ryu’s hands, using an AI to control him. Canna calls Ryu a murderer and merges with the Egg to become the Goddess, wielding the Dragon Sword as the Black Narwhal sinks.

Ryu, Mizuki, and Ishigami chase the Goddess to Tokyo, where she causes destruction. Ryu and Mizuki are attacked by Cliff, who has transformed into a mutant. Theodore appears and kills Cliff, restoring his memories. Ryu and Theodore pursue the Goddess, but Theodore betrays Ryu, claiming the Blade of the Archfiend will kill Canna. They fight, and Ryu kills Theodore with the blade. Theodore chants a spell, removing Ryu’s curse. He chooses to die as atonement.

Ryu confronts the Goddess. During their final battle, both the Blade of the Archfiend and the Goddess’s Dragon Sword are destroyed. Ryu’s original Dragon Sword returns, and he defeats the Goddess, killing her. Canna falls into Ryu’s arms, safe and alive. Ryu leaves her in a secure area for Mizuki to find. With his mission complete, Ryu departs into the sunrise.

Development and release

The game was announced during a private event at the Tokyo Game Show 2010, where only one image was shown. Later, a teaser poster was released, showing Ryu covered in blood and pulling on his mask. Yosuke Hayashi, the head of Team Ninja, said: "Ryu appears to be using his right hand. Something unusual is happening with this hand. It is covered in blood, but the blood looks strange." Hayashi added: "Ryu is removing his mask, and this is a way to draw people into his world. We want players to experience the real Ryu Hayabusa. The amount of blood is not about killing others; it might be Ryu's own blood. Our focus is on Ryu's actions, not just on fighting enemies."

The development team did not include the ability to cut off limbs, a feature from earlier games. A Team Ninja staff member explained that players no longer wanted to see this, so it was removed. At the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2011, it was announced that the game includes competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes, with each mode allowing up to eight players.

The game's story was written by Masato Kato, who also created the plot and designed graphics for the original Ninja Gaiden trilogy on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Hayashi mentioned that characters from the NES series would appear. Robert, a character from Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos, appears as a pilot who helps Ryu jump onto another jet.

A demo of the fighting game Dead or Alive 5, included with Ninja Gaiden 3, features Ryu Hayabusa, Ayane, Hayate, and Hitomi. The Xbox 360 version of the demo allows players to use Hayabusa and Hitomi, while the PlayStation 3 version includes Hayate and Ayane. The collector's edition of Ninja Gaiden 3 lets players use all four characters. A new statue of Ryu fighting a boss was released with the collector's edition and included with the game in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The package also includes an art book, a soundtrack CD, and a premium code for the full Dead or Alive 5 demo.

Three downloadable content packs were released in April 2012. They include new weapons (Falcon's Talons and Eclipse Scythe), armor and headgear customization items, and new "Ninja Trials" minigames.

Reception

Ninja Gaiden 3 received mixed reviews from critics. Many reviewers said the game was too simple compared to earlier versions. The website Metacritic, which collects reviews, gave the Xbox 360 version a score of 58 out of 100 and the PlayStation 3 version the same score.

Some reviews were positive. Official Xbox Magazine gave the game an 8 out of 10, saying the fighting and visuals were strong but noting the game was too simple and had a weak ending. The Official PlayStation Magazine UK gave it a 7 out of 10, stating the game was enjoyable but did not fully meet its goals. Computer and Video Games also gave it an 8 out of 10, though they noted that serious gamers might not like the many changes made to make the game more accessible to a larger audience.

Other reviews were negative. GameSpot gave the game a 5.5 out of 10, calling it a shallow action game that lacked the difficulty and depth of earlier games in the series. IGN gave it a 3 out of 10, describing it as having serious problems with its technology.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge

The new and improved version called Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge was released for the Wii U in 2012 and for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013. Koei Tecmo included this version in the Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection, which was released in June 2021 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
