Gameplay

In the game Titanfall, players control "Pilots" and their mech-style Titans. They fight in six-on-six matches that take place in the war-torn outer space colonies known as the Frontier. The game is designed for fast-paced, non-stop action. Players can wall-run and fight alongside computer-controlled soldiers. Other games in the series feature unique characters who can use special abilities.

Games

Titanfall, the first game in the series, came out for Xbox One and Microsoft Windows on March 11, 2014. It was released for Xbox 360 on April 8, 2014. The game focused mainly on multiplayer play and did not include a single-player story. Instead, it had a single-player tutorial to help players learn how to play.

Titanfall 2 was released on October 28, 2016, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows. This game included a single-player story with a full plot. Many features from Titanfall returned, such as multiplayer maps. The game received several free updates after its release, including a multiplayer mode called Frontier Defense. A level called "Effect and Cause" was especially well received.

Titanfall: Assault was a top-down real-time strategy game for mobile devices, similar to Clash Royale. It was developed by Particle City and Respawn Entertainment, published by Nexon, and released for iOS and Android in August 2017. All servers for Titanfall: Assault were shut down on July 30, 2018. The game was removed from Google Play on July 31, 2018, after the servers closed.

Titanfall: Frontline was a collectible card game played in real time. Players collected and used Pilot, Titan, and burn cards to damage opponents. Pilot and Titan cards could combine to deal extra damage. Titanfall: Frontline was cancelled in January 2017.

In 2016, EA announced a partnership with Nexon to create an Asian market-specific version of Titanfall called Titanfall Online, similar to Counter-Strike Online and Call of Duty Online. This version was based on the first Titanfall game, with some changes like four main pilots, a new Titan, and a new map. Titanfall Online had a closed beta in 2017. It was cancelled on July 9, 2018, mainly due to poor testing results and a changing market.

On February 2, 2023, a rumored single-player Titanfall and Apex Legends game, codenamed TFL (short for Titanfall Legends), was cancelled before any public announcement.

A Titanfall project codenamed "R7" was cancelled in April 2025. People familiar with the project said the game was in an early development stage and was made by Respawn Entertainment.

Development

Titanfall is the first game created by Respawn Entertainment, a company started by Jason West and Vince Zampella. Before founding Respawn, Jason West and Vince Zampella worked at Infinity Ward, where they contributed to the development of the Call of Duty series. They were fired after disagreements over contracts.
