Dominique McLean, born on March 2, 1998, is professionally known as SonicFox. They are an American esports player who competes in fighting games and currently plays for FlyQuest. SonicFox has won many tournaments, including eight events in the Evolution Championship Series (EVO) across five different game series. As of August 4, 2019, they were the highest-earning fighting game esports player in the world, with total earnings of more than $719,204.94. They are well known for winning competitions in Mortal Kombat and Injustice, both created by Netherrealm Studios. In 2018, McLean was named Esports Player of the Year at The Game Awards. They were also listed in Forbes' 2020 "30 Under 30" for Games.
As a furry, McLean is recognized for wearing a fursuit that represents their fursona, which is a blue and white fox that looks like a person.
Career
McLean's older brother, Christian, introduced McLean to fighting video games when McLean was three years old. For several years after that, McLean played games and joined the furry fandom around the age of ten or eleven. They created a character named "SonicFox" and are known for participating in tournaments while wearing a fursuit that represents their fursona, a blue-and-white anthropomorphic fox.
In 2011, McLean played Mortal Kombat in online games that were not competitive. Friends encouraged McLean to try an offline Mortal Kombat tournament in 2012. Although McLean placed ninth at the event, they enjoyed the exciting competition and continued to take part in fighting game tournaments.
At the Injustice: Gods Among Us tournament at Evo 2014, McLean won all six matches. In December 2015, News.com.au reported that McLean had not lost a tournament in the previous 18 months and earned $150,000 USD in two weeks by winning Mortal Kombat competitions.
In 2018, McLean was named "Esports Player of the Year" at The Game Awards ceremony. Their speech during the event received media attention. In 2020, Forbes included McLean in their "30 Under 30" list in the Games category.
In early 2020, SonicFox joined the fighting games division of the esports team Evil Geniuses. Later that year, SonicFox appeared as a background character in the game Skullgirls. In late 2023, SonicFox announced they were leaving Evil Geniuses.
In December 2025, SonicFox signed with the fighting games division of FlyQuest.
Personal life
McLean grew up in Townsend, Delaware. In 2018, McLean was a student at the New York Institute of Technology. McLean focused on schoolwork while keeping a balance between their gaming career and studies. McLean publicly identifies as gay. In September 2019, McLean shared on Twitter that they identify as non-binary. McLean uses "they" as their pronoun and only uses masculine pronouns for people they are close to, to help others become more comfortable with using "they" as a pronoun.
