The Meta Quest, which was first called the Oculus Quest until August 2022, is a series of virtual reality headsets that can also do augmented reality. These devices were created by Reality Labs, a part of Meta. The first version of the Oculus Quest was made by Oculus, which was originally a brand of Facebook and later became a division of Meta called Reality Labs. It was released on May 21, 2019. Since then, Meta (formerly Facebook) has introduced new Quest models and updated the operating system, called Horizon OS. As of February 2023, more than 20 million Quest headsets have been sold. In 2023, Meta reached a deal with Comcast, and Meta Quest headsets now include access to Peacock.
Summary
The Meta Quest line is a self-contained device, similar to the earlier Oculus Go. It runs games and apps without needing a separate computer, using the Android-based Quest operating system. The device tracks movement in all directions using built-in sensors and cameras on the front of the headset, instead of external sensors. It also supports hand tracking. The Quest line includes a feature called "Oculus Link," which connects the headset to a computer through a USB cable, allowing it to use software and games designed for the Oculus Rift. It was the first Meta device to offer augmented reality through "Passthrough," which displays the real-world view from the headset's cameras when the user moves outside a set boundary area called "Guardian." Starting with the Meta Quest Pro, the Quest models have included color passthrough, showing colored images from the real world. As of 2025, the Quest series is the largest platform for virtual and augmented reality headsets worldwide.
