Kenneth A. Williams, born on October 30, 1954, is an American businessman and game programmer. He started On-Line Systems with his wife, Roberta Williams. On-Line Systems later became Sierra On-Line. It was later renamed Sierra Entertainment. The couple played important roles in creating graphical adventure games. At its peak, Sierra had nearly 1,000 employees before it was bought in 1996.

History

Ken Williams was born on October 30, 1954, in Evansville, Indiana, but later grew up in Simi Valley, California. Ken and Roberta made early contributions to the computer game industry, which were partially written about in the book Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution. He wrote the textbook Apple II Computer Graphics and articles for Softline.

Williams and his wife, Roberta, started a company called On-Line Systems in 1979. Sierra’s online service, the ImagiNation Network, was bought by AT&T in 1994. Ken Williams was the president of Sierra until July 1996, when the company was sold to CUC International. He continued to help guide the company’s direction until November 1997.

As Sierra’s CEO, Williams focused on creating innovative products. He said, “I’m not sure if I’m like most CEOs… Most of my time is spent looking at product. To me, everything is about being able to build great products. Any game that does not push the state of the art leaves an opportunity for a competitor’s game to look better.”

In Sierra’s later years, the company focused on publishing games made by other studios, including Half-Life by Valve. Williams said, “By the time I decided we wanted to enter the first-person shooter genre, we were too far behind. With 20/20 hindsight, I missed a chance to buy id Software. Valve was the first group I spoke with that could put Sierra in front of id.”

In 1992, Williams supported the idea of a software rating system similar to the one used for movies. This idea came before the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) was created in 1994 by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) to address concerns about violent or sexually explicit video games.

In 2014, Ken and Roberta received the Game Awards’ first Industry Icons award.

Williams said that Microsoft and The Walt Disney Company influenced Sierra’s business model. He explained, “These two companies were our role models. I read every book about both companies. I tried everything to understand how they thought and how they did business.”

Microsoft now owns the Sierra brand and its intellectual property after buying Activision Blizzard in 2023.

After taking a break from the computer game industry, Williams returned in 2022, working with Roberta on a new VR and flatscreen version of Colossal Cave 3D Adventure, a revised version of a 1977 text-adventure game. Before this, he focused on writing and managing a website-building tool called Talkspot. He also wrote three books about boating, describing his travels with Roberta on their 68-foot Nordhavn trawler. He runs a blog about cruising, Ken’s Blog, and another about his time at Sierra, Sierra Gamers. His memoir, Not All Fairy Tales Have Happy Endings: The Rise and Fall of Sierra On-Line, was released on July 24, 2020.

In June 2021, Williams announced that he and Roberta were working on a game called The Secret, in partnership with artist Marcus Maximus Mera.

Depictions

Williams is known for his mustache and hairstyle. His appearance has influenced Sierra's designers, who used his look for some game characters. Williams also made special guest appearances in some games. One example is his role as chief Keneewauwau of the Nontoonyt natives and as the annoying joke teller in Leisure Suit Larry games. He also appeared as a whipper in the "ScumSoft" company in Space Quest III and as Kenny the Kid in Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist.

As a producer for Diablo II at Blizzard North, the unique weapon "Kinemil's Awl" was created using letters from his name rearranged.

Personal life

Ken married Roberta Williams when he was 19 years old. Together, they have two children: D.J., who was born in 1973, and Chris, who was born in 1979. The Williams family has homes in Seattle, France, and Mexico.
