Gigantic is an American animated musical fantasy film that was not made yet. It is based on the English fairy tale "Jack and the Beanstalk." The film was planned to be directed by Nathan Greno and Meg LeFauve, produced by Dorothy McKim, and include original songs by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Gigantic was first scheduled to be released on November 21, 2018, but the date was moved to November 25, 2020, after it was announced that Ralph Breaks the Internet would be released on the original date. However, on October 10, 2017, Disney canceled the movie because of creative differences. Raya and the Last Dragon then took the November 2020 date, even though its release was later moved to March 5, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Premise
During the Age of Exploration in Spain, a boy named Jack discovers a hidden land of giants in the clouds. He befriends an 11-year-old giantess named Inma, who treats him like a doll. At the same time, there is a group of Storm Giants who are 120 feet (37 meters) tall.
Production
In August 2015, during the D23 Expo, Disney announced a film called Gigantic. Dorothy McKim was chosen to produce the film, and the music would be written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who had previously worked on Winnie the Pooh and Frozen. The film’s director, Nathan Greno, said the project aimed to create a new version of the story "Jack and the Beanstalk," noting that no single version of the tale had ever been considered definitive. The film would differ from the original story. On October 3, 2016, Disney announced that Meg LeFauve, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter known for Inside Out, would join Greno as a director.
On October 10, 2017, Ed Catmull, President of Walt Disney Animation Studios, said the film’s production had "ended active development for now." A different project, later named Raya and the Last Dragon, would take the original release date. Catmull explained that sometimes, even with strong ideas and effort, projects do not work as planned. He added that Disney would stop active development of Gigantic at that time. A month later, The Wall Street Journal reported that Disney had written off nearly $98 million in production costs for the film.
Before the project was canceled, Gigantic was mentioned in a scene from Disney’s 2016 film Zootopia. In that scene, the film was called Giraffic. Other upcoming films mentioned in the scene included Moana, referred to as "Meowana," and Frozen 2, called "Floatzen 2."
In 2020, Disney released concept artwork from Gigantic in the book They Drew as They Pleased: Volume 6—The Hidden Art of Disney's Golden Age.
In 2023, a new version of the Jack and the Beanstalk story was announced to be in development by Skydance Animation. John Lasseter would return as a producer, and Rich Moore, a former Disney animator, would direct the film.
Release
In 2015, the movie Gigantic was planned to be released on March 9, 2018. On June 30, 2016, Disney confirmed that Ralph Breaks the Internet would instead be released on that date, and Gigantic was delayed to November 21, 2018. In April 2017, Ralph Breaks the Internet took the November 2018 release date, and Gigantic was rescheduled to November 25, 2020.
