After Avalanche Software closed on May 11, 2016, Disney decided to retire the franchise, even though some sources mentioned that plans were being made to continue the series. Many new characters and playsets had already been planned for future releases. (Avalanche Software has since reopened under Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.) On December 9, 2016, "Gold Editions" of the three games in the series were released for Microsoft Windows (via Steam). These editions include all the figures and playsets that had already been made available.

Gameplay

Disney Infinity games are action-adventure games that use physical toys, open-world creation, and story-based gameplay. Characters, playsets, and other features are added to the game using figurines and discs with the Infinity Base. Most characters, except non-human ones like those from the Cars series, can double jump (unless in a vehicle) and have a default set of attacks, as well as a unique ability. For example, Sulley and Jack Skellington can roar to scare others, while Violet and Randall can turn invisible. The game has two main modes: Play Set and Toy Box. Each Play Set is a self-contained world based on a specific movie or series with its own story and characters. Characters from one world cannot enter another world, but players can combine characters from different worlds in Toy Box mode. Toy Box is a customizable mode where players can build and explore their own worlds. The MagicBand can be used to unlock items in the game.

Many Play Sets are available in the series. To access them, players place the corresponding Play Set piece on the Infinity Base. These Play Sets are based on popular movie and TV franchises, including:

  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Monsters University
  • The Incredibles
  • Cars
  • The Lone Ranger
  • Toy Story in Space
  • The Avengers
  • Spider-Man
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic
  • Star Wars: Rise Against the Empire
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • Inside Out
  • Finding Dory
  • Marvel Battlegrounds

Each Play Set includes its own story campaign, playable by up to two players. Characters from a specific franchise can only be used in their own Play Set (for example, Mr. Incredible cannot be used in the Pirates of the Caribbean Play Set). To play a Play Set with two players from the same series, two figures from that series are needed. However, Marvel and Star Wars Play Sets (except Marvel Battlegrounds) include collectible "Crossover/Champion coins" that allow players to use characters from other Play Sets. Completing a Play Set unlocks items and vehicles that can be used in Toy Box mode.

Toy Box mode lets players create their own game in an open-world environment. Players can mix and match characters, weapons, and gadgets unlocked from Play Sets. Unlocking new content in Play Sets allows players to build their own worlds and create custom games. Toy Box mode includes "adventures" that teach players how to use the mode's tools. Players can earn "spins" by completing Play Sets or leveling up characters, which can be used to unlock new items. The mode supports online multiplayer, where players can use items the other player has, but only during the session.

A portable version of Toy Box was released in late 2013 for the iPad. A version for Microsoft Windows is also available. These versions use web codes included with Disney Infinity characters.

The Infinity Base has two round spots for figurines and one hexagonal spot for world discs. Placing figurines on the Infinity Base adds characters to the game, while world discs unlock Play Sets.

Power Discs are discs that can be placed on the Infinity Base with characters to add new features to the game. Players can use up to three environment-enhancing discs (hexagonal Power Discs) in Toy Box mode and up to two character-enhancing discs (circular Power Discs) per character. Environment-enhancing discs can change the terrain, background sky, add vehicles, or weapons. Character-enhancing discs can increase damage, restore health, or speed up leveling. One Power Disc is included in the Starter Pack, and additional discs are sold in blind bags containing two discs each.

Disney Toy Box

After the series was canceled, Disney announced that it would start a new line of action figures. These action figures would use the same art style as the games.
