Star Wars is an action space game released in 1993 by Sega. It is based on the original Star Wars trilogy, combining parts from A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. Players control a Rebel starship and fight against the Empire. Sega created the game for their Model 1 system, the same hardware used for Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing. Like those games, Star Wars uses polygons to create its graphics. A home version called Star Wars Arcade was released in 1994 as an exclusive for the 32X console.

Sega later released Star Wars Trilogy Arcade, Star Wars: Racer Arcade, and a Star Wars pinball game.

Gameplay

The game plays similarly to Atari's 1983 Star Wars arcade game. Players control an X-wing or Y-wing in first- or third-person view and fight against Imperial forces. The game has three levels: stopping TIE fighters in an asteroid field, destroying a Super Star Destroyer, and attacking a Death Star. The arcade machine lets two people play, one as the pilot and the other as the gunner.

Reception

In Japan, Game Machine listed Star Wars Arcade as the sixth most successful upright/cockpit arcade machine in June 1994.

Electronic Gaming Monthly called the game okay but not very exciting for the 32X. They liked the high-quality graphics but said the gameplay was boring and the movement was limited. GamePro also said the game showed the 32X's strong graphics but had repetitive gameplay. They noted that the controls were complicated when using a standard three-button gamepad and that the second player's cursor was hard to see in some backgrounds during cooperative play. Next Generation described the 32X version as "a good version of a popular game" and a sign of what the 32X could do. Flux magazine praised the graphics and recorded sound effects but said the controls were difficult. They recommended the game for fans of Star Wars.
