Monster Hunter Freedom is an action role-playing game released in 2005. It was created and published by Capcom for the PlayStation Portable. This game is the first handheld version in the Monster Hunter series. It is an improved version of Monster Hunter G, adjusted to make it easier for players to complete quests alone and progress through the game.

Gameplay

This game, like earlier versions such as Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter G, involves players completing tasks and collecting items to improve their gear and progress. The rarer the items and equipment, the stronger the character's abilities become. Unlike other action games that focus on fighting with strength alone, this game requires strategy and skill to defeat large monsters. Hunters can use various weapons, including Sword and Shield, Great Swords, Dual Blades, Hammers, Lances, Light Bowguns, and Heavy Bowguns. Each weapon needs specific items to craft, which players obtain by completing quests, collecting materials from monsters, or finding them on the ground.

In this mode, players can complete quests given by the village elder, do guild quests alone in the Offline Gathering Hall, and purchase items to help finish quests. They can also care for a farm to gather useful resources.

If players join the Online Gathering Hall, they can team up with others using the PSP's adhoc feature. They can trade guild cards that track character progress, go on treasure hunting quests, and sit at a table while waiting for others to join. At the table, players can press directional buttons to perform animations, such as swinging a beer mug or pretending to pass out from drunkenness. Additionally, players can use third-party software to connect with others over the internet and play together wirelessly.

Classes

There are different Hunter ranks, numbered from HR1 to HR5. As a player's Hunter rank increases, they can face more challenging monsters and earn more and better items and weapons.

G-Rank is a new feature in Monster Hunter Freedom. These quests come from Monster Hunter G, a game that was not released in the United States or Europe. G-Rank quests offer a greater challenge for hunters. As a result, hunters receive better rewards for completing these quests. They also gain access to stronger versions of monsters they have seen before, called "sub-species." Some monsters can only be found in G-Rank quests.

Reception

The game received "average reviews" from Metacritic, a website that collects video game ratings. In Japan, the review magazine Famitsu gave it scores of 9, 9, 8, and 8, which adds up to 34 out of 40 possible points.
