Joseph Manuel Marquez, born on December 10, 1991, is an American professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player and streamer from Norwalk, California. He is known by his online name Mango, which is sometimes written as Mang0 or MaNg0. Marquez plays in a bold and risky way, and many people believe he is one of the greatest players in the history of the game. He is part of a group called the "Five Gods" of Melee, which includes Adam "Armada" Lindgren, Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman, Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma, and Kevin "PPMD" Nanney. Marquez started his career playing the character Jigglypuff, but since 2011, he has mostly played Falco and Fox. He is widely seen as the best Falco player and one of the best Fox players in Melee.
Marquez has won many important tournaments, including GENESIS 2009, EVO 2013 and 2014, The Big House in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2019, and Smash Summit 11 in 2021. From 2013 to 2024, he was ranked among the top ten Melee players in the world each year. He was ranked the number one Melee player in the world in 2013 and 2014. A list made by PGStats in 2021 named Marquez the greatest Melee player of all time. He is very popular, with over 500,000 followers on Twitch.
Marquez was part of the Cloud9 esports team, which he joined in 2014. In June 2025, he was accused of sexual harassment after being seen on a live stream while drunk and pretending to perform a sexual act on Maya Higa, a female commentator during a Ludwig Ahgren Mario Kart event. This led to his removal from Cloud9 and a ban from several major Super Smash Bros. tournaments.
Career
Marquez began his career as a Jigglypuff player. He said that The King, a Canadian Jigglypuff player, inspired him. He helped improve the character’s position in the Melee tier list, which shows how strong characters are in the game. Marquez entered EVO 2007, where he beat players like Mew2King. He finished third after losing to Ken Hoang. He placed third in Singles at Super Champ Combo. In doubles, he also placed third with his partner Lucky, after defeating the team of Ken and Isai.
Marquez’s first national tournament win was at Pound 3 in 2008.
On July 10, 2009, Marquez attended GENESIS, a tournament organized by the San Francisco Melee crew DBR. With 290 entrants in Melee Singles, GENESIS was the largest Melee tournament at the time. Marquez reached the Winners’ Finals and lost 2–3 to Adam "Armada" Lindgren, a Peach player who was considered the best in Europe. He faced Armada again in the Grand Finals and won the tournament.
He claimed first place at Pound 4, the largest Melee tournament in history with over 300 entrants. He defeated Hungrybox in the Grand Finals.
After being banned on Smash World Forums, Marquez, along with DBR and friends from his region, created an alias called ScorpionMaster94. They used Mario to play in tournaments and tricked other players.
In 2011, Marquez entered GENESIS 2 and reached the Grand Finals against Armada. After a close and intense match, Marquez placed second, losing 2–3.
Marquez secured his position as the North American champion by winning Revival of Melee 4. He defeated Dr. PeePee 3–0 in the Winners’ Finals and 3–1 in the Grand Finals.
At Apex 2012, Marquez placed third after losing 1–3 to Hungrybox in the Losers’ Finals. After Apex 2012, Marquez regained the strong lead he had in 2008. He won IMPULSE, a Canadian national tournament, after defeating Dr. PeePee, Hungrybox, and Mew2King. He continued his winning streak by defeating Hungrybox in the Grand Finals at MELEE-FC10R Legacy and again at The Big House 2. At Apex 2013, Marquez lost to Mew2King and placed fourth.
At B.E.A.S.T 3 in Sweden, Marquez won the tournament after defeating Ice in the Grand Finals. He also won Kings of Cali 2, defeating Wobbles 3–0 in the Grand Finals.
At NorCal Regionals 2013, Marquez reached the Grand Finals after defeating Fly Amanita, Westballz, and PewPewU in the Losers’ Bracket. He won the first set against Hungrybox 3–0 but lost the second set 2–3. At Vindication, Marquez lost the first set of the Grand Finals 1–3 but won the second set 3–1, winning the tournament.
At Zenith 2013, Marquez reached the Grand Finals and won the tournament after defeating Hungrybox in two sets, both 3–1.
At IMPULSE 2013 in Toronto, Marquez claimed first place without losing a game. He defeated Unknown522 3–0 in both the Winners’ and Grand Finals. Teaming with Unknown522, Marquez also took first in Melee Doubles and first in Project M Singles.
EVO 2013 had 709 entrants and was the seventh largest Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament at the time. After winning Zenith 2013, Marquez reached the Grand Finals and defeated Wobbles in two sets, 3–0 and 3–1, to become the champion. Following his EVO victory, he was considered the best player in the game. After winning EVO 2013 and the birth of his son, Marquez announced he would take a short break from competitive Melee. In 2013, he played fewer tournaments, mostly using secondary characters. He placed second at LANHAMMER 2013 with Marth and second at Pound V.5 with Marth and Captain Falcon.
At Fight Pitt 3, Marquez lost to Mew2King in the Grand Finals.
By the end of 2013, Melee It on Me (MIOM) 2013 SSBMRank placed Marquez as the best player of that year.
Revival of Melee 7 marked Marquez’s return to competitive Melee. He won the tournament without losing a set. At Fight Pitt IV, Marquez defeated Mew2King in the Grand Finals.
At WHOBO MLG, Marquez defeated Hax in two sets of the Grand Finals 6–0 using Falco to win the tournament and qualify for MLG Anaheim 2014.
On May 6, 2014, Cloud9 HyperX announced they had signed Marquez to lead their fighting games division. Marquez entered Get On My Level 2014 in Toronto, where he took first place, beating Hungrybox 3–2 in the Grand Finals.
MLG Anaheim 2014 had one of the largest prize pools in Smash history at US$15,000 and was the first Major League Gaming-sponsored Melee tournament since 2006. Marquez defeated PPMD in the Winners’ Semifinals 3–2. He beat Armada in the Winners’ Finals and again in the Grand Finals, both sets 3–2, to claim first place.
Marquez later attended CEO 2014, where he reached the Grand Finals but lost to Armada. At Kings of Cali 4, Marquez reached the Winners’ Finals, where he faced Armada. He lost the first set 1–2 but won the second set 2–1. He placed second.
At EVO 2015, Marquez reached the top 8 for the fourth straight time. In the Losers’ Quarterfinals, he lost to Hungrybox 1–2, ending his EVO 2015 run with a fifth-place tie with Leffen. He also teamed with Lucky and placed ninth in Doubles.
After EVO 2015, MIOM ranked Marquez third in its 2015 Summer SSBMRank.
Marquez’s first tournament after EVO 2015 was Paragon Los Angeles 2015 on September 5 and 6. He beat Mew2King 3–2 in the Grand Finals to take first place. Marquez attended HTC Throwdown in San Francisco
Personal life
Marquez has Costa Rican heritage. He graduated from John Glenn High School in 2010. He and his partner, Lauren, have one son named Joseph Mango Marquez, who was born on October 14, 2013. Joseph’s middle name comes from his father’s Melee handle. Marquez said that playing video games helped him avoid joining gangs. In 2016, Lauren accused Marquez of domestic violence and adultery. Marquez and his mother denied these claims. He currently lives in Norwalk, California. After winning EVO 2013, he lived in Ohio but has since returned to his hometown. Marquez’s early career in Melee is shown in an episode of the 2013 documentary series The Smash Brothers.
