Joseph Manuel Marquez (born December 10, 1991), known by his online name Mango (also written as Mang0 or MaNg0), is an American professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player and streamer from Norwalk, California. He is known for his aggressive, high-risk playing style and is often called one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

He is one of the "Five Gods" of Melee, along with Adam "Armada" Lindgren, Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman, Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma, and Kevin "PPMD" Nanney. Marquez started his career playing the character Jigglypuff, but he has mainly played Falco and Fox since 2011. Many people believe he is the best Falco player and one of the best Fox players in Melee.

Marquez has won many important tournaments, including GENESIS 2009, EVO 2013 and 2014, The Big House in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2019, and Smash Summit 11 in 2021. He was ranked among the top ten Melee players in the world every year from 2013 to 2024. He was the number one player in the world in 2013 and 2014. A 2021 list created by PGStats named Marquez the greatest Melee player of all time. He is very popular among fans, with over 500,000 followers on Twitch.

Marquez was part of the Cloud9 esports team from 2014 until 2025. In June 2025, while drunk, he acted inappropriately by touching attendees during a livestreamed beer drinking event hosted by Ludwig Ahgren. This led to his removal from Cloud9 and a ban from Super Smash Bros. tournaments.

Career

Marquez started his career as a Jigglypuff player. He said he was inspired by a Canadian Jigglypuff player named The King. He helped improve the character’s ranking in the Melee tier list, which shows how strong different characters are in the game. Marquez entered EVO 2007 and defeated players like Mew2King. He placed third after losing to Ken Hoang. He also placed third in Singles at Super Champ Combo. In doubles, he placed third with his partner Lucky after beating the team of Ken and Isai.

Marquez’s first national tournament win was at Pound 3 in 2008.

On July 10, 2009, Marquez attended GENESIS, a tournament organized by the San Francisco Melee crew DBR. With 290 players in Melee Singles, GENESIS was the largest Melee tournament at the time. Marquez reached the Winners’ Finals and lost 2–3 to Adam "Armada" Lindgren, a Peach player considered the best in Europe. He faced Armada again in the Grand Finals and won the tournament.

He won first place at Pound 4, the largest Melee tournament in history with over 300 players. He defeated Hungrybox in the Grand Finals.

After being banned from Smash World Forums, Marquez, along with DBR and friends, created an alias called ScorpionMaster94. They used Mario to play in tournaments and trick other players.

In 2011, Marquez entered GENESIS 2 and reached the Grand Finals against Armada. After a close match, he placed second, losing 2–3.

Marquez became the North American champion by winning Revival of Melee 4. He defeated Dr. PeePee 3–0 in the Winners’ Finals and 3–1 in the Grand Finals.

At Apex 2012, Marquez placed third after losing 1–3 to Hungrybox in the Losers’ Finals. After Apex 2012, Marquez regained his strong performance from 2008. He won IMPULSE, a Canadian national tournament, by defeating Dr. PeePee, Hungrybox, and Mew2King. He continued his winning streak by defeating Hungrybox in Grand Finals at MELEE-FC10R Legacy and The Big House 2. At Apex 2013, Marquez lost to Mew2King and placed fourth.

At B.E.A.S.T 3 in Sweden, Marquez won the tournament after defeating Ice in the Grand Finals. He also won Kings of Cali 2 by defeating Wobbles 3–0 in the Grand Finals.

At NorCal Regionals 2013, Marquez reached the Grand Finals after defeating Fly Amanita, Westballz, and PewPewU in the Losers’ Bracket. He won the first set 3–0 against Hungrybox but lost the second set 2–3. At Vindication, Marquez lost the first set of the Grand Finals 1–3 but won the second set 3–1 to win the tournament.

At Zenith 2013, Marquez reached the Grand Finals and won the tournament after defeating Hungrybox in two sets, both 3–1.

At IMPULSE 2013 in Toronto, Marquez won first place without losing a game. He defeated Unknown522 3–0 in both the Winners’ and Grand Finals. Teaming with Unknown522, Marquez also won first place in Melee Doubles and Project M Singles.

EVO 2013 had 709 players and was the seventh-largest Melee tournament at the time. After winning Zenith 2013, Marquez defeated Wobbles in two sets, 3–0 and 3–1, to become the champion. Following his EVO victory, he was considered the best player in the game. After winning EVO 2013 and having a child, Marquez took a short break from competitive play. In 2013, he played less often, focusing on family. During this time, he entered tournaments with secondary characters, placing second at LANHAMMER 2013 with Marth and second at Pound V.5 with Marth and Captain Falcon.

At Fight Pitt 3, Marquez lost to Mew2King in the Grand Finals.

By the end of 2013, Melee It on Me (MIOM) 2013 SSBMRank listed Marquez as the best player of that year.

Revival of Melee 7 marked Marquez’s return to competitive play. He won the tournament without losing a set. At Fight Pitt IV, Marquez defeated Mew2King in the Grand Finals.

At WHOBO MLG, Marquez defeated Hax 6–0 using Falco in two sets of Grand Finals to win the tournament and qualify for MLG Anaheim 2014.

On May 6, 2014, Cloud9 HyperX announced they signed Marquez to lead their fighting games division. Marquez entered Get On My Level 2014 in Toronto and won first place, defeating Hungrybox 3–2 in the Grand Finals.

MLG Anaheim 2014 had one of the largest prize pools in Smash history at $15,000 and was the first Major League Gaming-sponsored Melee tournament since 2006. Marquez defeated PPMD 3–2 in the Winners’ Semifinals. He beat Armada in the Winners’ Finals and again in the Grand Finals, both sets 3–2, to win first place.

Marquez attended CEO 2014 and reached the Grand Finals but lost to Armada. At Kings of Cali 4, he reached the Winners’ Finals, where he faced Armada. He lost the first set of the Grand Finals 0–3 but won the second set 3–1 to place first in Singles.

At the end of 2014, MIOM ranked Marquez first in its 2014 Summer SSBMRank.

EVO 2015 became the biggest Melee tournament ever with 1,200 players. Marquez reached the top 8 for the fourth straight time. In the Losers’ top 8, he lost to Hungrybox 1–2 in the Quarterfinals, ending his EVO 2015 run with a fifth-place tie with Leffen. He also placed ninth in Doubles with Lucky.

After EVO 2015, MIOM ranked Marquez third in its 2015 Summer SSBMRank.

Personal life

Marquez has Costa Rican heritage. He graduated from John Glenn High School in 2010. He and his partner, Lauren, have one son named Joseph Mango Marquez, who was born on October 14, 2013. Joseph's middle name is inspired by his father's Melee nickname. Marquez said that his interest in gaming helped him avoid joining gangs. In 2016, Lauren accused Marquez of domestic violence and adultery, but Marquez and his mother denied these claims multiple times. Marquez currently lives in Norwalk, California. After winning EVO 2013, he lived in Ohio but has since returned to his hometown. Marquez's early Melee career was included in an episode of the 2013 documentary series The Smash Brothers.
