James Ohlen is a video game designer. He served as the senior creative leader at BioWare for 22 years. In 2018, he founded a publishing company called Arcanum Worlds. In 2019, Ohlen became the lead of a new studio, Archetype Entertainment, which is part of Wizards of the Coast. His role includes creating new video games and intellectual property for the company.

Career

James Ohlen began his career by managing a comic store and running two Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. These campaigns were very popular, and each had a waiting list. Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, who started BioWare, hired Ohlen because of his skills in Dungeons & Dragons. At BioWare, Ohlen first worked on testing a game called Shattered Steel. Later, he became the lead designer for Baldur's Gate, a game that helped make BioWare successful. Because of this success, Ohlen was promoted to Director of Design. He continued working as the lead designer on other Dungeons & Dragons games, including Baldur's Gate 2 and Neverwinter Nights. He later led the design of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age: Origins.

In 2006, James Ohlen moved to Austin, Texas, to help start a new BioWare studio with Gordon Walton and Rich Vogel. This studio created the MMORPG game Star Wars: The Old Republic.

In 2018, Ohlen left BioWare after 22 years to start his own publishing company, Arcanum Worlds. The first book published by Arcanum Worlds was Odyssey of the Dragonlords.

In April 2019, Wizards of the Coast announced it would open a new studio in Austin to create new intellectual properties (IP). Ohlen was chosen to lead this studio. He accepted the position, saying it was an opportunity to work on projects similar to those from the 1990s and early 2000s. By January 2020, the studio was named Archetype Entertainment, and another former BioWare member, Chad Robertson, became vice-president and general manager. A month later, Drew Karpyshyn, also a former BioWare member, joined Archetype as lead writer. Ohlen continued to manage Arcanum Worlds, but the new studio would not use any intellectual property developed by Arcanum.

On December 17, 2025, it was announced that James Ohlen had left his role as Studio Head at Archetype Entertainment. This came days after a new gameplay trailer for Exodus and the game’s launch date were shown at the 2025 Game Awards.
