Facebook Gaming is a service for playing and watching games online. Facebook started it officially on June 1, 2018, as part of the Facebook app and as a separate app. The service became very popular in Southeast Asia and helped create famous people online, such as ChooxTv in the Philippines.
History
In August 2016, Facebook worked with Blizzard Entertainment to add gaming features to its Facebook Live streaming service through Battle.net's client. In March 2017, Facebook allowed users to stream games from their desktop computers. In December 2017, support for streaming Facebook Instant Games was added.
A toolkit for game developers was released in March 2018.
In 2019, Jeremy "DisguisedToast" Wang joined Facebook Gaming. Shortly after, Facebook also signed Super Smash Bros. streamer Gonzalo "ZeRo" Barrios.
On February 18, 2020, Ronda Rousey did her first live stream on Facebook Gaming, stating she would stream once each week. Details about her contract were not shared. On April 20, 2020, Facebook expanded its gaming app to more countries. On June 22, 2020, Microsoft announced it would stop its Mixer streaming service and direct users, including partnered streamers, to Facebook Gaming. In exchange, Facebook Gaming would connect with Microsoft's xCloud cloud gaming service.
In August 2022, Meta announced it would close its separate gaming app. However, users could still play games by visiting the gaming section in the main Facebook app.
