Camelot Co., Ltd., which also operates as Camelot! Software Planning, is a Japanese company that creates video games. It was started in 1994 and is located in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The company is famous for making sports games, especially those featuring characters from Nintendo's Mario series.
History
Camelot was founded on April 4, 1994, by Shugo Takahashi, who is the brother of producer Hiroyuki Takahashi. The company was created to make games for Sony's PlayStation. Camelot made their first game, Beyond the Beyond, while helping Sonic! Software Planning with Shining Wisdom. They later helped with Sonic's next game, Shining the Holy Ark.
In April 1998, after Sega combined its Sonic investment into its subsidiary Nextech, Hiroyuki Takahashi became Camelot's president. Camelot completed Shining Force III in Sonic's place and then began making games for Nintendo consoles.
The studio has created many Mario sports games, such as Mario Golf and Mario Tennis, as well as the Golden Sun series of role-playing games.
The Mario character Waluigi was created by Camelot. This happened when Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto asked them to design a "Wario-like" character for Luigi during the development of Mario Tennis.
