Relic Entertainment is a Canadian video game company based in Vancouver. It was started in June 1997 by Alex Garden and Luke Moloney. The company’s first game, Homeworld (1999), was followed by two more games: Impossible Creatures (2003) and Homeworld 2 (2003). Relic signed a contract with publisher THQ to create two additional games. However, before these games were released, THQ bought Relic in May 2004 for $10.2 million in cash. The company was then renamed THQ Canada, with "Relic Entertainment" used as a brand for marketing purposes. THQ published the next five games made by the company. In 2004, Relic released its first licensed game, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. It also created two original games in 2006: The Outfit and Company of Heroes. Later, the company focused on making more games and expansion packs for the Warhammer 40,000 and Company of Heroes series.
In December 2012, THQ went bankrupt and sold its properties and subsidiaries. In January 2013, THQ Canada was sold to Sega for $26.6 million, along with the rights to the Company of Heroes series. The studio was renamed Relic Entertainment again. After joining Sega, Relic released one more game in the Warhammer series and two more games in the Company of Heroes series, all published by Sega. It also released Age of Empires IV. In March 2024, Relic left Sega and became an independent studio once more, planning to publish its own games.
