Silent Hill 2 is a 2024 survival horror game created by Bloober Team and released by Konami Digital Entertainment. It is a new version of the 2001 game Silent Hill 2, which was first made by Team Silent, a group inside Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo (KCET). This game is the first major release in the Silent Hill series since Silent Hill: Downpour in 2012. Like the original, it follows James Sunderland, a man whose wife has died, who goes back to the town named Silent Hill in Maine after receiving a letter from his late wife, Mary, who says she is waiting for him there.
The new version of Silent Hill 2 was officially announced in October 2022, after many months of rumors and secret information. It was directed by Mateusz Lenart from Bloober Team and produced by Motoi Okamoto from Konami. Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka, who were the creature designer and composer for the original game, helped with its development. According to Maciej Głomb, Ito created drawings for the game’s locations and monsters, and Yamaoka returned as the composer.
Silent Hill 2 was released for PlayStation 5 and Windows on October 8, 2024, and later for Xbox Series X/S on November 21, 2025. Critics gave the game mostly positive reviews, praising its graphics, the feel of the game’s environment, the acting, and how closely it follows the original game. By October 2025, the game had sold more than 2.5 million copies and received several awards, including nominations at the British Academy Games Awards, the Golden Joystick Awards, and The Game Awards.
Gameplay
The goal of Silent Hill 2 is to help James Sunderland, the main character, explore the town of Silent Hill as he looks for his wife and fights monsters. Unlike the first game, Silent Hill 2 uses an updated camera view from the side and a revised way to fight enemies.
The game is divided into sections and chapters, each showing part of James's emotional and mental journey. These areas include streets, buildings, apartments, and famous places in Silent Hill like Brookhaven Hospital and the Lakeview Hotel. Players move through dark, detailed environments using a flashlight and map. Many areas require special items to advance, which can be found by solving puzzles or defeating enemies. Details in the game world and sounds around you help create a scary and engaging experience. Players can use tools like a plank or steel pipe, or guns like a pistol and shotgun. Combat is intentionally difficult, making the character feel vulnerable. Saving bullets and health items is important because supplies are limited. The game includes many puzzles, from finding keys to solving tricky problems. Puzzle difficulty can be adjusted separately from combat difficulty, changing how complex the solutions are. Some puzzles need you to read notes, look for clues, or use symbols and patterns. Silent Hill 2 has multiple endings based on player choices, such as how often health items are used, how a companion character is treated, or how much time is spent in certain areas. These endings show James's mental state and offer different versions of the story.
Synopsis
Silent Hill 2 takes place in the small resort town of Silent Hill in Maine. The town is covered in thick fog and appears abandoned, but its environment changes as the player explores. The town looks worn and decaying, with rusted metal, wire fences, and darkness. It is suggested that the town’s appearance depends on the person seeing it; some may see fog, while others might see fire or ice.
The main character is James Sunderland, a man who travels to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his deceased wife, Mary. He believes Mary might still be alive and wants to see her. During his journey, James meets several characters: Angela Orosco, a 19-year-old girl searching for her mother; Eddie Dombrowski, a man who is overweight, bullied, and paranoid; and Laura, an 8-year-old girl who knew Mary and dislikes James. James also meets Maria, a woman who looks like Mary.
James arrives in Silent Hill after receiving the letter, which mentions that Mary died three years earlier from a serious illness. He ignores Angela’s warning that the town is dangerous and discovers it is inhabited by strange creatures and stalked by a powerful monster named Pyramid Head. At Toluca Lake, where James believes Mary is waiting, he meets Maria, who resembles Mary but has a more confident and flirtatious personality. Maria helps James search for Mary, but Laura runs away when James does not believe her story about knowing Mary.
Later, James and Maria are attacked by Pyramid Head, who kills Maria. James then rescues Angela from a monster that represents her abusive father. Despite James’s help, Angela accuses him of not wanting Mary to be around. James later finds Maria alive in a labyrinth, but when he returns, she is dead and disfigured like Mary.
James confronts Eddie, who admits to harming others before arriving in Silent Hill. Eddie attacks James, forcing him to kill him in self-defense. At the hotel, Laura gives James a letter from Mary, which reveals that Mary could not have died three years ago. James watches a videotape that shows their vacation and his act of smothering Mary. After recalling his actions, James confesses the truth to Laura.
Angela thanks James for saving her but regrets it. She asks for a knife but is refused, and she ascends a burning staircase. Later, James witnesses Pyramid Head killing Maria again. He realizes Pyramid Head was created from his guilt but decides he no longer needs it. James faces a monstrous version of either Mary or Maria on the hotel rooftop.
The game’s ending depends on the player’s choices:
– In "Leave," James admits he resented Mary for her illness and killed her to end their pain. Mary forgives him and gives him a final letter, and he leaves with Laura.
– In "Maria," James chooses to leave with Maria, who may also become sick.
– In "In Water," James commits suicide by driving into Toluca Lake.
– In "Stillness," Mary comforts James before his death.
– In "Bliss," James seems to stay in the vacation videotape, ignoring his actions.
– In "Rebirth," James tries to bring Mary back by summoning old gods.
– Humorous endings include James discovering a Shiba Inu dog orchestrated events ("Dog") or being taken by aliens ("UFO").
Development
In June 2021, Polish game developer Bloober Team announced a "cooperation agreement" with Konami. This agreement included working together on some projects and sharing their knowledge. Bloober Team's CEO, Piotr Babieno, said that Konami's decision to partner with Bloober Team showed that Bloober Team had become an important player in the gaming industry. Konami also shared a statement, saying they were excited to work with Bloober Team on future projects involving their intellectual property, while Bloober Team would continue making their own games.
In September 2022, leaked images claimed to be from a planned remake of Silent Hill 2 by Bloober Team were shared online. These leaks supported reports that Konami was working with outside developers to bring the Silent Hill series back to life. A person who shared the leaks said the images came from an early test version Bloober Team made to show Konami their ideas. Konami later removed the images. Another leak appeared the next month when a YouTube description for a trailer was accidentally made public.
In October 2022, Konami officially announced the Silent Hill 2 remake during a presentation called Silent Hill Transmission. The presentation also included announcements for other Silent Hill projects, such as Silent Hill f, Silent Hill: Townfall, Silent Hill: Ascension, and the film Return to Silent Hill. This remake is part of Konami's effort to increase interest in the Silent Hill franchise, which had not had a major new game since Silent Hill: Book of Memories (2012) and the canceled Silent Hills project. The remake will include contributions from original designer Masahiro Ito and composer Akira Yamaoka. The game uses Unreal Engine 5.
Bloober Team's creative director, Mateusz Lenart, said the team wanted to keep the unique atmosphere of Silent Hill 2 while improving the gameplay. He also noted that the original third-person combat system and some story scenes were completely redesigned. In an interview, Konami producer Motoi Okamoto said that Bloober Team and Konami had different ideas about what parts of the game to update. However, he added that Bloober Team's respect for the original game helped ensure the remake honored its legacy. The game includes references to earlier Silent Hill titles, such as the "Silent Hill Ranch" sign written in comic sans from the Silent Hill HD Collection.
Release
Silent Hill 2 was released for PlayStation 5 and Windows on October 8, 2024. People who pre-ordered the digital deluxe edition of the game received 48 hours of early access. The game was only available on PlayStation 5 for the first year and was later released on Xbox Series X/S on November 21, 2025.
Reception
Silent Hill 2 received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to the review aggregator website Metacritic. OpenCritic reported that 95% of critics recommended the game. In Japan, four critics from Famitsu gave the game a total score of 35 out of 40.
Critics praised Silent Hill 2's faithfulness to its source material. Giovanni Colantonio of Digital Trends called the game a "faithful tribute to a horror classic that hardly holds anything back" and praised Bloober for not changing the original story. Eurogamer's Vikki Blake noted the game's expansion and its careful preservation of key elements. Jason Faulkner of Game Revolution, who gave Silent Hill 2 a perfect score, wrote that it "sets a new golden standard when it comes to remakes" and highlighted how the story was "carried over completely intact, honoring the original narrative while adding depth where appropriate."
Silent Hill 2's atmosphere and graphics were highlighted by critics. Ben Rayner of Digital Spy stated that the visuals "are impressive and really elevate the tension of exploring Silent Hill's abandoned buildings and streets—each feeling just off enough to ratchet that tension up as you dig deeper." Tristan Ogilvie of IGN compared its environment to "a scab you can't stop picking." The game's updated soundtrack was also praised, with Mark Delaney of GameSpot calling it "incredible" and "unforgettable, even as it's often deliberately at odds with the events you're seeing on the screen."
Some critics noted issues with the gameplay. Colantonio said the game was "padded with backtracking" and that the combat "gets old." Delaney praised the melee combat but criticized the large number of ammo and health items provided. Leon Hurley of GamesRadar+ described the combat as a "mix of clumsy pipe swinging and wobbly aiming" but praised the ability to dodge. TechRadar's Sarah Thwaites wrote that "clunky combat doesn't work with a new camera angle, making for frustrating fights." Liam Croft of Push Square believed the gameplay was one of the game's strengths and called it "weighty." Kelsey Raynor of VG247 called it "good enough."
Silent Hill 2 sold over 1 million units within four days of its release, making it the fastest-selling game in the series before Silent Hill f surpassed this record. By January 2025, the game had sold over 2 million units. By October 2025, sales reached over 2.5 million units, helping the franchise reach 13 million units sold in total.
At the IGN Japan Awards on December 11–12, Silent Hill 2 was awarded Best Sound Design, Best Story, and Game of the Year. On December 20, the IGN Awards recognized it as Best Horror Game and nominated it for Best Game and Best PlayStation Game, while the game won the IGN Community Awards' Best Horror Game. A week later, Shacknews named Silent Hill 2 the Best Horror Game at its annual online event.
