Capcom Arcade Stadium is a video game collection released in 2021 by Capcom. It includes 32 arcade games first made by Capcom between 1984 and 2001. One game is available for free, and the rest must be bought separately. The game was first released for the Nintendo Switch, then for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Later, it was also released for Amazon Luna. A second collection, called Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium, was released in 2022. Before this, in 2013, Capcom made a similar game called Capcom Arcade Cabinet for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Overview

Capcom Arcade Stadium includes 1943: The Battle of Midway as a free game. The other 31 games can be bought as downloadable content (DLC). Ghosts 'n Goblins was available for individual purchase, while the rest were first sold in three groups of ten games each. Each group includes games from a specific time period: Dawn of the Arcade (1984–1988), Arcade Revolution (1989–1992), and Arcade Evolution (1992–2001). In October 2021, all games became available for individual purchase. In June 2022, Street Fighter II was free to download until July 2022 to celebrate its first anniversary, Capcom's 39th anniversary, and the release of Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium.

The games run on an emulator that allows players to rewind gameplay, choose difficulty levels, adjust game speed, and use filters that look like old arcade screens. Some changes were made to Street Fighter II: the Rising Sun Flag was removed from E. Honda's stage because it is linked to Japanese war crimes, and the flag of Hong Kong was replaced with the flag of China for Fei Long in the character selection screen due to the handover of Hong Kong after the game's original release. In May 2021, Capcom added a paid DLC that allows players to use an invincibility cheat in each game.

In May 2021, Capcom announced the collection would grow and asked fans for ideas on social media. On April 11, 2022, Capcom announced a sequel called Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium, which was released on July 22, 2022, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. This collection includes 32 new games, with SonSon as a free game and Three Wonders as a bonus for pre-orders and early purchases of Capcom Fighting Collection.

Reception

In December 2020, Capcom announced its new game collection, Capcom Arcade Stadium. Comic Book Resources reported that this collection included more than twice as many games as the 2013 version, Capcom Arcade Cabinet, which was available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. However, the source expressed concern about the trend of companies like Nintendo and Capcom re-releasing classic games for each new console generation. It stated that this practice may be unfair to gamers.

Nintendo Life noted that while some games in Capcom Arcade Stadium had appeared in earlier collections, such as the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle, the selection of shoot 'em up games was praised. This collection included games like Progear and 1944: The Loop Master, which were available for the first time on consoles.

As of December 2023, sales of Capcom Arcade Stadium reached 1.8 million units, and sales of Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium reached 1.2 million units.
