On April 1, 2026, the game was made available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch.

In Content Warning, up to four players use a diving bell to explore a large, ancient underground world that has been abandoned. This world is called "The Old World." The players’ goal is to film monsters inside and return to the surface to upload their recordings to a website named "SpöökTube." To advance in the game, players must reach a specific number of views on their videos. They can use money earned from ads on their videos to purchase upgrades.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Content Warning is similar to Lethal Company and Phasmophobia, two cooperative survival horror video games played from a first-person perspective. Up to four players can work together to explore the Old World, which consists of large underground ruins with entrances that lead to randomly created rooms containing lost items, artifacts, and dangerous creatures. The Old World is extremely large, spanning hundreds of millions of meters. While inside the Old World, players have oxygen meters that decrease over 500 seconds unless they are inside the diving bell, which stops the oxygen timer when used to travel to and from the Old World.

Players must record videos of the monsters they encounter using a camera, then return to Sky Island to upload the videos to Spooktube to earn views and ad revenue. The number of views and money earned depends on how dangerous the monsters are, how much they appear on screen, and how they interact with players. Some gadgets can also increase views and ad revenue. After uploading, players can save their videos to their computer in .webm format.

Players have three days to meet a view goal. They can upload one video to Spooktube per day and make only one trip to the Old World before returning to the bedroom to rest and end the day. If players fail to meet the view goal, the game ends, all equipment and money are lost, and the view goal resets to the starting number. Players can also accept a sponsor, a side task that rewards Metacoins. Metacoins can be used to buy customizations for Sky Island, such as a trampoline or swimming pool, or to purchase cosmetic items like hats.

At Sky Island, players can use a kiosk near their house to buy items with earned money. Purchasable items are grouped into categories:

  • Lights: These items help players see better, such as flashlights and flares. Flashlights can be recharged at a station near the diving bell.
  • Medical: This includes items like the Hugger, which slowly heals nearby players, and the Defibrillator, which can revive a dead player.
  • Gadgets: These items help improve recordings or provide defense. Examples include the clapper, sound player, and boom mic, which increase view counts, and tools like the goo ball, grappling hook, and shock stick. The goo ball creates a slime that slows enemies. The shock stick temporarily stuns creatures or players. The grappling hook pulls players or creatures toward the user or helps them move to a fixed point.
  • Emote: This includes consumable emote books. Players can perform actions that increase view counts when recorded on camera.
  • Misc: This includes the party popper, a consumable item that makes a loud noise and releases confetti when used.

Each item takes one inventory slot, and players can carry up to three items at a time. In addition to purchased items, players may find items scattered in the Old World. Artifacts, which slightly boost view counts when recorded, are not available for purchase and may have unique harmful effects. Artifacts cannot be taken back to Sky Island, and any items left in the Old World are lost forever.

As of the May 2024 update, Content Warning includes 32 monsters. These monsters behave differently. Examples include:

  • Snail: A slow, two-legged creature with a shell and a hollow face. It chases players and holds them, slowly taking away their health.
  • Bomber: A creature that stalks players from a distance and throws bombs. The bombs take time to explode, damaging players in a blast area and pushing them back.
  • Knifo: A small ghost-like creature with a knife. It runs at players while making sounds like a child laughing and stabs them.
  • Patrick: A star-shaped creature that sits on building rooftops. If players walk under it, it grabs them and slowly damages them until they die.

Players can customize their avatar’s face using a monitor in the bedroom of the lobby area. This feature allows players to choose a diving helmet visor color from a preset list and add emoticons or text symbols to display on the visor.

Release

Content Warning was created between February and April 2024 by a group of five developers. According to Landfall's website, the game was primarily made during an internal game jam in Seoul, South Korea. The game was released on April 1, 2024, and was free to play for the first 24 hours.

In November 2025, an update added 48 new achievements to the game. Other changes included fixing problems and improving performance.

Reception

The game Content Warning received positive reviews on online platforms such as Steam. Within twelve hours of its release, the game had 50,000 players actively playing on Steam at the same time. The game reached its highest number of concurrent players, over 200,000, less than 24 hours after launching. During the launch period, it was reported that more than 6.2 million Steam users had claimed the game for free. By mid-April 2024, the game's developer, Landfall, stated that the game had sold more than one million copies in addition to the number of users who claimed it while it was free.
