As a follow-up game to Enter the Gungeon, players control one of four characters as they try to escape the collapsing Gungeon. The game received different opinions from players upon its release.

Gameplay

Exit The Gungeon is a 2D game where players dodge many bullets while moving around. Players choose from four characters, called Gungeoneers, who must escape a falling apart place called the Gungeon. Each Gungeoneer has different levels to explore. They ride an elevator that is attacked by enemies shaped like guns. Players use a gun that changes randomly over time because of a special power called a blessing. If a player kills enemies without getting hurt, the gun is more likely to change into a stronger form. Beating boss enemies gives players Hegemony Credits, which can be used to unlock new gun forms. Once unlocked, the gun can randomly change into these new forms. Players can move through levels and avoid attacks by rolling or jumping, which stops them from losing health when in the air. Since it's a roguelike game, players return to a safe area called the Underbreach when they die. In the Underbreach, players can switch characters, talk to other characters, or use Hegemony Credits to buy guns and items that might appear during the game.

Reception

According to Metacritic, the Nintendo Switch version of Exit the Gungeon received "mixed or average reviews." OpenCritic reported that 45% of critics recommended the game, calling it fairly approved. Nic Vargus of IGN criticized the frequent switching of weapons but noted that the unpredictable and exciting gameplay made the experience enjoyable. Jon Mundy of Nintendo Life gave the game a 7/10, stating it was a challenging action-platformer but missing the creative ideas and sense of adventure found in Enter the Gungeon. Shacknews mentioned that Exit the Gungeon was shorter and had less exploration than its predecessor, but it was similar in combat difficulty and received praise for its arcade-style gameplay.
