Etrian Odyssey is a type of game where players explore dungeons. It is mainly created and released by Atlus and is now owned by Sega. By 2016, the series had sold a total of 1.5 million copies around the world.
Each game in the series follows groups of adventurers who enter ancient, dangerous labyrinths near large trees. These labyrinths are found in different parts of the world. The adventurers search for fame, treasure, or to learn about the mysteries of the past, including remains of ancient civilizations.
Titles
The first game in the series was first announced by Atlus through Famitsu after showing it at E3 2006. It was released in 2007 in Japan and the Americas, and the following year in PAL regions.
In late 2007, Atlus announced a sequel to Etrian Odyssey. It was reported that the game would feature 12 job classes, and Yuji Himukai, Makoto Nagasawa, and Yuzo Koshiro would return to their roles, with Shigeo Komori becoming the director. All of the character classes from the first game were reused, along with three new classes: Beast, Gunner, and War Magus. The mapping system was improved with new symbols to make maps more detailed and accurate. The sequel was released on February 21, 2008, in Japan and in North America on June 17, 2008. The game did not release in any other region.
The Drowned City includes ocean exploration along with dungeon exploration, both using the familiar mapping system. Old classes from previous games were replaced with new classes. The game was released in Japan on April 1, 2010, and in North America on September 21, 2010. The game did not release in any other region.
Legends of the Titan was the first game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS. It featured a world that players could explore freely in addition to dungeon exploration. It was released in Japan on July 5, 2012, in North America on February 26, 2013, and in Europe on August 30, 2013.
In late November 2014, Atlus announced two other Etrian Odyssey games along with Etrian Mystery Dungeon. It was released in Japan on August 4, 2016, in North America on October 17, 2017, and in Europe and Australia in November 2017.
The game was released in Japan on August 2, 2018, and in other countries on February 5, 2019. It includes classes and dungeons from throughout the series history.
A remastered collection of the first three games in the series was released for Steam and Nintendo Switch on June 1, 2023. It includes improved graphics, a remastered soundtrack, features like difficulty selection and multiple save slots, and 24 additional character portraits. The collection does not include any story changes or extra content from the Untold remakes of the first two games. This is the first time the series has included languages other than Japanese and English since the European version of Etrian Odyssey in 2008.
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl is a remake of Etrian Odyssey that includes animated cutscenes and voice acting. It was released in Japan on June 27, 2013, in North America on October 1, 2013, and in Europe on May 2, 2014.
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight is a remake of Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard, similar to Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl. It includes a story mode with characters, cutscenes, an orchestrated soundtrack, and new features. It was released in Japan on November 27, 2014, in North America on August 4, 2015, and in Europe on February 12, 2016.
Etrian Mystery Dungeon is a game that combines the Mystery Dungeon and Etrian Odyssey series. Instead of showing the dungeon from a first-person view, players see everything from a third-person angle. The original game system was changed to use the Mystery Dungeon’s turn-based strategy, where players can analyze their moves before acting. The game was released in Japan on March 5, 2015, in North America on April 7, 2015, and in Europe on September 11, 2015.
A sequel to Etrian Mystery Dungeon was released in Japan on August 31, 2017.
